The Great Southern Railway Society was initially formed in March 1984 as the “Dandenong Foster Railway Preservation Society” by three dedicated and enthusiastic members.
This group then took out a lease on Nyora station, in South Gippsland, and built up our collection of rollingstock.
In 1987 the group became the Great Southern Railway Society (G.S.R.S.). To protect it’s assets, the South Gippsland Tourist Railway was formed to operate Tourist trains between Nyora and Leongatha until 16th January in 2015 when the SGTR was disbanded In 2016 the G.S.R.S. changed its name to “Victorian Railways” with the name becoming available as a registered business after expiration of the Victorian government run Victorian Railways.
We are a not for profit voluntary organisation dedicated to the restoration of rollingstock as manageable projects.
